IMAP service won’t start
Hello Everyone, I need to enable IMAP on my server, but I cant start the IMAP or NNTP services from the Exchange System Manager. I keep getting an error that says: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Check the Windows Event Viewer for details. When I check the event viewer, there are no messages that tell me anything about this error. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks, Chris

Set IMAP and NNTP services to automatic in services snap-in, then use ESM to verify that IMAP and NNTP is started.

Ok, got it. Thanks. I've actually asked around and looked for those services many times before but was never able to find them because that's not what they are called. Here's the services that need to be turned on, for anyone who's searching this thread for the answer:Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP)

I know this is coming more than 5 years later but, to anyone coming across this issue I resolved this exact problem. I created a Service Account in Active Directory that is a member of the Exchange Organization Group and Enterprise Admins and created a good secure password. From there, I modified the Logon properties of the Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 and POP3 services to use the new account instead of the Local System Account. This allowed the services to start and restart with no issue. I understand that all of the super-admins out there may discourage this resolution because of the fact that the Built-In Local System Account was allowing other services to start but, just not the two. I resolved my issue without an expensive call to Microsoft, no downtime and I updated my clients technical documentation to reflect the one-off issue. Make changes and document! Also, this affected Exchange 2007 and not Exchange 2003 as the original poster was having the problem with.
